A Few Minutes in Matthew
Matthew 1:19
“And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.”
Explanation of the Text
Joseph is described as “just” or “righteous.” This emphasizes that this righteousness is not merely legal precision; it is mercy shaped by faith. Joseph believes God’s law is good, but he also refuses to expose Mary to shame or public accusation. He chooses the path that holds together obedience and compassion.
The Lutheran Study Bible notes that under Jewish law, betrothal could only be ended through divorce. Joseph assumes Mary has been unfaithful; what else could explain a pregnancy, but he responds with quiet grace. He neither condones sin nor seeks vengeance.
This prepares us for something beautiful: before Joseph knows the full truth, he is already acting in the way God desires, justly, mercifully, humbly. God will soon reveal what Joseph cannot see, but Joseph’s character already reflects the heart of the Savior he is about to receive into his home.
What This Teaches Me About God
God works through humble, faithful people. He delights in righteousness that is not cold or harsh, but compassionate. His own righteousness is always joined to mercy.
What This Teaches Me About Myself
We often judge situations without knowing the full story. We fail to combine truth and compassion. We need God to teach us a righteousness shaped by His mercy, and to help us trust Him when we cannot yet see His plan.
Prayer
Father, give me a righteousness like Joseph’s, faithful, humble, and compassionate. Help me act with mercy even when I do not understand. Amen.
