A Few Minutes in Matthew
Matthew 1:20
“But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream…”
Explanation of the Text
Joseph does not act rashly. Matthew tells us he “considered” these things, a word suggesting deep thought, struggle, and prayer. Between verses 19 and 20 is a night of turmoil in Joseph’s heart. He loves Mary, he believes God’s law, and he is torn. Joseph is not a passive man; he is wrestling with what it means to do what is right.
And it is precisely in that moment of confusion that God speaks. “Behold,” (Matthew’s way of getting our attention) “an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.” God is not late. He enters Joseph’s distress at just the right moment. Joseph does not find the answer to his dilemma; the answer comes to Joseph.
In Scripture, dreams are not inward psychological symbols but outward acts of God. This dream is a revelation: God intervenes, clarifies, and directs. Joseph doesn’t just receive comfort, but also the truth that would reshape his entire life.
What This Teaches Me About God
God meets His people in their confusion. He does not wait for them to figure things out before He acts. He intervenes with clarity and grace at the right time and in the right way.
What This Teaches Me About Myself
My thoughts can be a storm. I often try to sort out life on my own, but true clarity comes from God’s Word, not my reasoning. I need Him to speak into my uncertainty.
Prayer
Lord, speak into my confusion with Your clear and gracious Word. Guide my thoughts and give me trust in Your timing. Amen.
