A Few Minutes in Matthew
Matthew 1:20
“…saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.’”
Explanation of the Text
The angel addresses Joseph as “son of David.” This title matters. It stresses that Joseph’s Davidic identity is the means by which Jesus becomes legally, publicly, and royally the Son of David. God calls Joseph by this title to remind him of his role in the Messiah’s arrival.
The angel begins by saying, “Do not fear.” Joseph’s fear is understandable: fear of making the wrong decision, of public shame, of misunderstanding God’s will. But the angel speaks courage into Joseph: take Mary, because the child is God’s work, not human sin.
“That which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” Matthew repeats this truth so we cannot miss it: Jesus’ origin is divine. He is truly human, yet not the product of human will. The incarnation is God’s gracious miracle, breaking the pattern of sin and beginning the new creation in Mary’s womb.
What This Teaches Me About God
God gives courage by giving truth. He does not ask Joseph to act blindly; He reveals His gracious work. God takes the initiative in salvation and invites us to walk in the confidence of His promises.
What This Teaches Me About Myself
Fear often shapes my decisions. I assume worst-case scenarios. I need God to speak His truth into my fears and remind me that His work, not my understanding, is the foundation of my life.
Prayer
Lord, calm my fears and help me trust Your work in my life. Make me bold in faith and confident in Your promises. Amen.
